Sometimes a Page Just Falls Together Easily

May 24, 2023 by Rayna Diane Hennen

Sometimes an art journal spread takes a while, sometimes it’s just waiting there for you to find it!

A year-long art journaling course gave me the courage to answer an Instagram post calling for entries from a little art gallery near me.

A Wreath of Possibilities…

January 27, 2015 by Rayna Diane Hennen

What turns out to be some years ago now, I created a winter wreath. I wanted it to last for more than just the holidays both for frugality and because I lived in a little one bedroom with my boyfriend and there was no room for storage. Even though I now live in a slightly larger two bedroom, I still store my Christmas decorations at my mom’s! Ironically while dealing

Global Sketchbook Project Day

June 3, 2012 by Rayna Diane Hennen

Today was the Sketchbook Project meet-up day. I almost didn’t go – it was such a perfect Sunday to not do anything. Just sunny enough, just breezy enough. Did I really want to go hang out with people I didn’t know, who might not even show? But I did go and I’m glad I went!

Seeing Visions

March 18, 2012 by Rayna Diane Hennen

I am part of this really cool 8 week coaching intensive program, the Live Your Dream Challenge with Jenny Fenig, success coach to savvy women-on-a-mission, and our first assignment was to create vision boards – a way of seeing what your dream looks like to better help you achieve that dream. You can use magazine images, typography, anything you want really, that will convey what you’re wanting to happen. It’s fun making time to just sit and pull out pictures that you really like. Focus on yourself!

Summer Wreath

August 4, 2011 by Rayna Diane Hennen

I was determined that, before I went on my three week trip to visit my mother, that I was going to finish my summer wreath. I think that green yarn covered circle had been sitting on my desk staring me down for around two months! Enough is enough! The base of the wreath is the same as my Winter Wreath, two circles of cardboard glued together. I got the flower

Winter Wreath

January 12, 2011 by Rayna Diane Hennen

January always seems to be such a dreary month. Christmas is over, the decorations have come down, and the days are short (though slowly getting longer!). A while back I bought the Holidays & Celebrations magazine from Somerset Magazines. It’s not just for Christmas, though, they have Valentine’s Day, Easter and Halloween, too. There was a how-to for a ‘prize ribbon wreath’, by Lori Oles, within the first few pages that

Soft & Pretty – White Mirror

August 20, 2010 by Rayna Diane Hennen

The paint may be my favorite part and I didn’t know it would look the way it does when I started painting. The paint went on very thick and so as I added more paint, there are layers that are raised and softer and areas where the paint is thinner and you can see the wood grain.

Flutterby Wings

August 13, 2010 by Rayna Diane Hennen

Well, most people know them as butterflies but when I was small and cute with chubby knees, I called them flutterbys! Which, actually, makes more sense to me still since that’s really what they do is flutter by you not butter fly you.

Experiments in creativity and cringe. Join me!

I was digging around in my closet for something an I was digging around in my closet for something and came across an older sketchbook, which of course derailed the search because I HAD to flip through it 😊

My Mom had this box for a long time, just sitting in a cabinet. It was just plain wood, the lid wasn't attached but it did come with the hinges. One summer I stole it, painted it and surprised her for Christmas.

On slides 2 & 3 you can see the first sketches I made for the box. And slides 5 & 6 show where the next round of sketches ended up. Completely different direction as it turns out! Went for the Arts & Craft period style she loves.
This floral cone actually turned out all right! I This floral cone actually turned out all right! I haven't quite gotten the ribbon exactly right so sometimes this style hangs a little awkwardly. I have wall versions, that can hang on a hook but I'll be damned if I can find any photos of it on my phone 🧐

Or the silvery one I made last year. You'll just have to trust me, ok? 😁
O-pin-ion: if you purchased these, would you expec O-pin-ion: if you purchased these, would you expect a hanger on the back (second pic)?

In my head, because they have the wooden lip on the back, they hang flat against the wall.

T'anks!

Almost done - varnish coating left to go! Happy Friday 💃
New hearts ready to go. New hearts ready to go.
After a few weeks away from the hearts because of After a few weeks away from the hearts because of vacation and other things, I ran into something that is both frustrating and good.

Frustrating because I had to "break my heart" 😭😅 - I noticed a lot of rhe edges kept coming up (last pic).

I was unhappy with how one of the hearts looked anyway so I pulled it off the canvas. (first pic)

The new way of attaching the hearts seems to be working better (second pic) so now I am going to do the same to the other 3 canvases.

So, frustrating to undo the work but good because they'll look better! And also this is how we get better.

Have you ever had to undo some work to make it better? 🫀
